Barnstorming: Wrightsville Beach, Wilmington, NC

So what the hell is barnstorming anyways?  Well, if you want the specific Webster definition:

“to travel from place to place making brief stops (as in a political campaign or a promotional tour)”

The political campaign/promotional tour part of that definition may not fit most of our travel activities but it’s the closest word to describe traveling that starts with a B, so go with it.

This past 4th of July weekend we did a bit of barnstorming, and that is what this post is going to be about.  Within that barnstorming there was some brewing and even some baking but more info on that will follow.

Three members of our illustrious group traveled to Wrightsville Beach in Wilmington, NCWave Surfing at Wrightsville Beach, Wilmington, NC for a day of basking on the beach and getting beat up by breaking waves.  It was a blast, even more of a blast than we thought it would be and well worth the 3 hour drive (which seemed to fly by).  The beach there is nice and wide and very clean despite it’s popularity.  Even on the holiday weekend, it was busy but not so crowded that it was annoying; we had plenty of space between ourselves and our neighbors.

We spent hours in the water getting the crap beat out of us by waves breaking on a sandbar right off the shore and trying to surf them into shore.  Sunglasses were lost (and other found ones used to replace them) and bathing suits had difficulty staying on (i.e. a little something peaked out) but we couldn’t stop laughing hysterically the entire time.  Wave Surfing at Wrightsville Beach, Wilmington, NCIt’s definitely good to be there when the tide is higher because then you get some really nice massive waves hitting the bar, which we noticed weren’t there when we walked on the beach during low tide that evening.  The waves would have been entertainment enough but we also brought a frisbee and football and made good use of them in and out of the water (note: footballs can survive being in the ocean).  The only hazard of this beach was the fact that we were having so much fun that we forgot to reapply sunscreen so everyone got a little burnt in one spot or another.

Wave Surfing at Wrightsville Beach, Wilmington, NCAlso, no alcohol allowed at the beach but people can work around that by pouring beer into metal water bottles.  Watermelon and Pirates Booty turned out to be a winning combination for beach snacks.  After beaching it for 4 hours or so, we headed into town to check out the local brewery…but I’ll leave that to the next post and the beer experts.
